Pop quiz. Three boxes of cereal. All three have a health claim on the front. All three sit in the "better for you" section of the grocery store. I poured one cup of each, added skim milk, and wore my glucose monitor for two hours. One of them raised my blood sugar 75 points. Take a guess. Here's the lineup. Special K Original. The diet cereal. Kellogg's built an entire weight-loss program around this box. Frosted Mini-Wheats. The whole grain cereal. Sugar-frosted on the outside, whole wheat on the inside. All-Bran. The fiber cereal. Nobody's first pick. But it has 12 grams of fiber per serving. Got your answer? I would have guessed wrong too. |

● The Reveal The diet cereal won. Special K raised my blood sugar 75 points. Frosted Mini-Wheats came in at 52. And All-Bran barely moved… just 25. So the cereal most people grab when they're trying to eat better raised my blood sugar three times more than the cereal nobody picks. Here's why. Special K is mostly rice. Milled, refined rice with less than 1 gram of fiber per serving. Your body breaks it down fast… almost as fast as white bread. The University of Sydney's glycemic index database rates Special K at 69 out of 100. That's high. All-Bran has 12 grams of fiber per serving. That fiber slows down how quickly your body absorbs the sugar from the carbs. The same database rates All-Bran at 42, about two-thirds of Special K's score. In other words, your body processes the same amount of cereal at completely different speeds depending on how much fiber is in the bowl. This is one person's experiment, not medical advice. Everyone's body responds differently. And here's what makes this timely. The FDA finalized a new definition of what foods can call themselves "healthy" on the box. Under the new rules, Special K no longer qualifies. Neither do Frosted Mini-Wheats. Too much added sugar or too much sodium, not enough of what your body needs. That standard takes full effect by February 2028. A glucose monitor got there years early. |
My mom’s memory returns every year around Christmas…
And by spring she’s forgetting her grandkids’ names again.
It’s heartbreaking.
And then I discovered Pumpkin Spice and special Italian Oranges can clear up her brain fog and bring her back to us.
Those were her favorites at Christmas.
So I started giving them to her every day.
But it wasn’t until I found one more ingredient that her memory really came back…

● The Scoreboard
● The Swap If you like cereal (I do), flip the box over. Find the fiber line on the nutrition label. Under 3 grams? That cereal may raise your blood sugar the way Special K raised mine. Look for 5 grams of fiber or more per serving, which the ADA calls an excellent source of fiber. It can make the difference between a cereal that sends your blood sugar up 75 points and one that barely moves it. The boring cereal won. It usually does.
